The history of the development of computers is usually referred to in terms of generations. Each generation is marked with a significant advancement in processor technology and software design. These technological advancements have resulted in cheaper, smaller, more powerful, more efficient, and more reliable computers.

The history of the computer starts with the calculator. As people needed to make more complex calculations, a device was needed to help make those calculations more quickly and more reliably. At first these devices were mechanical in nature. Then came the electronic computer. Most people recognize five different generations of computer development. In the last generation, the use of computers has also become integral in the way we communicate, so here we will add a sixth over lapping generation - The Internet Generation.
